The adoption of the Status of Health Professionals (Health Care Act) (Bill 47) restored the right of health care workers to access inheritance provisions, in accordance with Act B.C on Labour Relations. With these protective measures, workers no longer lose their collective agreement or union membership when a company is sold or transferred from one company to another. The new collective agreement with amazon shipping also contains a process and guidelines for the government, health employers and the union to study the potential of returning contracted services to the direct control of health authorities. The collective agreement for HSA members, who work in the field of local health services and assistance, is negotiated between the employers and the Community Bargaining Association (CBA), which represents members of the HSA, the BC Government Employees Union (BCGEU), the Hospital Employees Union (HEU), the Canadian Public Employment Union (CUPE), the American Union of Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) and the United SteelWorkers (USWA). The CBA has more than 750 HSA members and the vast majority of CBA members are represented by the BCGEU, which leads the negotiations. That`s when the union`s 4,000 members, in the area of contract support services, won an agreement to protect workers` jobs – and their union representation – when company contracts changed ownership. Then, in late 2018, the NDP provincial government kept its long-standing promise to HEU members to repeal Laws 29 and 94.
